Emperor Mage, Realm of the Gods, East, Ender's Game, Ender in Exile, First Meetings, Ender's Shadow, Burning Brightly
Emperor Mage and Realm of the Gods finishes up the Immortal's Quartet by Tamora Pierce.
In the Emperor Mage, a delegation from Tortall goes to Carthank to try and make peace. Daine goes to heal the Emperor's birds, who are falling sick with no apparent reason. However, not all is at it appears in the court of the Emperor Mage, and signs from the gods are becoming more and more noticable. And when the Graveyard Hag gets involved, watch out!
In Realm of the Gods, war ravages the western lands, fostered by the once Emperor-Mange Ozorn. Daine and Numair naturally do all they can in defence of Tortall, but even they are reaching their limits. When they get pulled into the realm of the gods, Daine finally finds out about her father. But there, Daine and Numair find out there is a much greater threat to the mortal world than even Ozorn.
It is interesting how Pierce weaves magic and scientific things such as dinosaurs into her tales. And it is nice to get a closer look at some of the gods, though as Daine and Alanna would tell you when the gods get involved, watch out!
East is by Edith Pattou. Rose was born to replace her older sister who died. However, Rose is North born (even if her mother won't admit it), and is not nearly as pliant or as content to stay by the hearth as her sister was. When misfortune befalls the family, a white bear comes offering a change in luck in exchange for the youngest daughter, Rose. To her parent's dismay, Rose agrees. As Rose spends time with the bear, she comes to care for him. Unfortunately, she also becomes more and more curious. When Rose does discover the bear's secret, Rose sets off on a quest to save the bear who is more than he seems.
Enger's Game is the book that made Orson Scott Card a known name in the science fiction community, winning both the Hugo and the Nebula awards the year it came out. It is based on a short story of the same name by the author. Ender is a dispised third child in an age with strict population rules. His parents were allowed to have him in hopes that he might help save humanity from the feared Buggers, aliens which have twice nearly destroyed Earth. Ender does qualify to go to battle school. There, Ender becomes the best of the best. But can even Ender save the Earth?
Ender's Shadow also by Orson Scott Card is Ender's Game written from Bean's perspective. Bean also was a child prodogy, and was Ender's friend right hand. His tough beginings on the streets of Rotterdam brought him to the attention of the International Fleet and he was also brought to Battle School. You don't need to read Ender's Game to read this book, it stands on its own. And it is interesting to read this alternate perspective since Bean was a lesser commander but even more observant and smart than Ender so he knew more of what was going on.
First Meetings is a collection of four short stories by Orson Scott Card. Polish Boy tells how John Paul (Ender's father) was found by Graft and made a deal that took his family from poverty in Poland to America. Teacher's pest tells how John Paul meat Theresa, the woman he would eventually marry, in college. The Investment Counselor tells how Ender met Jane and did his first speaking.
Ender in Exile goes into further depth of the time between Ender's leaving for the colonies and Speaker for the Dead, next in direct line from Ender's Game.
Burning Brightly by Mercedes Lackey tells the story of Lavan Firestorm. Lavan was a bit of a misfit in his merchant family, so he was sent to school. Unfortunately, at the school, there were a bunch of bullies. And when Lavan became their target, an extremely powerful and dangerous gift was released. Poor Lavan. His legend in Valdemar is almost on par with that of Vanyel, the last Herald Mage. It is good to finally have his story. And as always, you've got to love Mercedes Lackey's characterizations.
